Gridcoin 5.0.0.0-Mandatory "Fern" Release

https://github.com/gridcoin-community/Gridcoin-Research/releases/tag/5.0.0.0
Finally! After over ten months of development and testing, "Fern" has arrived! This is a whopper. 240 pull requests merged. Essentially a complete rewrite that was started with the scraper (the "neural net" rewrite) in "Denise" has now been completed. Practically the ENTIRE Gridcoin specific codebase resting on top of the vanilla Bitcoin/Peercoin/Blackcoin vanilla PoS code has been rewritten. This removes the team requirement at last (see below), although there are many other important improvements besides that.
Fern was a monumental undertaking. We had to encode all of the old rules active for the v10 block protocol in new code and ensure that the new code was 100% compatible. This had to be done in such a way as to clear out all of the old spaghetti and ring-fence it with tightly controlled class implementations. We then wrote an entirely new, simplified ruleset for research rewards and reengineered contracts (which includes beacon management, polls, and voting) using properly classed code. The fundamentals of Gridcoin with this release are now on a very sound and maintainable footing, and the developers believe the codebase as updated here will serve as the fundamental basis for Gridcoin's future roadmap.
We have been testing this for MONTHS on testnet in various stages. The v10 (legacy) compatibility code has been running on testnet continuously as it was developed to ensure compatibility with existing nodes. During the last few months, we have done two private testnet forks and then the full public testnet testing for v11 code (the new protocol which is what Fern implements). The developers have also been running non-staking "sentinel" nodes on mainnet with this code to verify that the consensus rules are problem-free for the legacy compatibility code on the broader mainnet. We believe this amount of testing is going to result in a smooth rollout.
Given the amount of changes in Fern, I am presenting TWO changelogs below. One is high level, which summarizes the most significant changes in the protocol. The second changelog is the detailed one in the usual format, and gives you an inkling of the size of this release.

Highlights

Protocol

Note that the protocol changes will not become active until we cross the hard-fork transition height to v11, which has been set at 2053000. Given current average block spacing, this should happen around October 4, about one month from now.
Note that to get all of the beacons in the network on the new protocol, we are requiring ALL beacons to be validated. A two week (14 day) grace period is provided by the code, starting at the time of the transition height, for people currently holding a beacon to validate the beacon and prevent it from expiring. That means that EVERY CRUNCHER must advertise and validate their beacon AFTER the v11 transition (around Oct 4th) and BEFORE October 18th (or more precisely, 14 days from the actual date of the v11 transition). If you do not advertise and validate your beacon by this time, your beacon will expire and you will stop earning research rewards until you advertise and validate a new beacon. This process has been made much easier by a brand new beacon "wizard" that helps manage beacon advertisements and renewals. Once a beacon has been validated and is a v11 protocol beacon, the normal 180 day expiration rules apply. Note, however, that the 180 day expiration on research rewards has been removed with the Fern update. This means that while your beacon might expire after 180 days, your earned research rewards will be retained and can be claimed by advertising a beacon with the same CPID and going through the validation process again. In other words, you do not lose any earned research rewards if you do not stake a block within 180 days and keep your beacon up-to-date.
The transition height is also when the team requirement will be relaxed for the network.

GUI

Besides the beacon wizard, there are a number of improvements to the GUI, including new UI transaction types (and icons) for staking the superblock, sidestake sends, beacon advertisement, voting, poll creation, and transactions with a message. The main screen has been revamped with a better summary section, and better status icons. Several changes under the hood have improved GUI performance. And finally, the diagnostics have been revamped.

Blockchain

The wallet sync speed has been DRASTICALLY improved. A decent machine with a good network connection should be able to sync the entire mainnet blockchain in less than 4 hours. A fast machine with a really fast network connection and a good SSD can do it in about 2.5 hours. One of our goals was to reduce or eliminate the reliance on snapshots for mainnet, and I think we have accomplished that goal with the new sync speed. We have also streamlined the in-memory structures for the blockchain which shaves some memory use.
There are so many goodies here it is hard to summarize them all.
I would like to thank all of the contributors to this release, but especially thank @cyrossignol, whose incredible contributions formed the backbone of this release. I would also like to pay special thanks to @barton2526, @caraka, and @Quezacoatl1, who tirelessly helped during the testing and polishing phase on testnet with testing and repeated builds for all architectures.
The developers are proud to present this release to the community and we believe this represents the starting point for a true renaissance for Gridcoin!

Summary Changelog

Accrual

Changed

Most significantly, nodes calculate research rewards directly from the magnitudes in EACH superblock between stakes instead of using a two- or three- point average based on a CPID's current magnitude and the magnitude for the CPID when it last staked. For those long-timers in the community, this has been referred to as "Superblock Windows," and was first done in proof-of-concept form by @denravonska.

List of moderately difficult skribbl words for your new friend group (1200+ words)

That is to say that this list contains words that this list contains words that:
  1. Usually aren't instantly guess-able (like star, apple, or Nike).
  2. Can be played with a group of acquaintances (I play with a group of interns at work to blow off time)
Created this list by modifying an existing difficult word list we found online and adding a bunch of new words. If you see a stupid difficult word, it was probably a word from the existing difficult word list that I forgot to remove. (amicable and reimbursement were the type of bs I removed lol).

Idea: New crimes.

Edit: The bottom aren’t crimes they just are my idea overflows. If only there was a way to edit Reddit thread titles lol.
Attend a street racing event. There’s a 60% caught rate. As you can either choose to run away or surrender to the police likewise and like so.
Shoplift. There will be a 50% caught rate. You can sell certain things like a flatscreen TV or something like that for money for example but the more valuable the item is the more money you’ll get if you sell it in the black market.
Go naked. With a 80% caught rate with either you will get a ticket to actually being caught and sent to jail for about a month and you won’t need to age for this it will just be considered a life event but you will still get a criminal record anyway for it if you do this.
Disturb The Peace. You can start yelling in a grocery store. Yell at a church. Yell in public. Or start running through the store or playing the floor is lava in the library for example. You’ll get 3 months in jail due to disturbing the peace and there will be a 80% caught rate.
Copyright Infringement: You will just be sued for this. No criminal charges. It’s if you sample something in a song you made if you’re a musician without permission, if you use someone else’s image and make it your logo, you can be sued for less than if you used a sample without their permission.
Street race. There will be a 70% caught rate. You can do wager races, pink slip races, and even police chases in the mini game where you can smash cop cars (if you get caught it will be attempted murder if you do this), there will be a little mini game too so that it will be more interactive. You can start doing it at 16 when you can have a license.
Rob a bank. There will be a 50% caught rate but there will be a little mini game where you have to hack through the bank. You can also hire people to aid in your robbing as well using the dark web.
Wire Fraud. There will be a 40% caught rate. There will be a little mini game where you have to hack through the bank.
Hack. It will have a 50% caught rate.
Have Sex Underage. With a 60% caught you which will be sent to Juvie for 3 years for underage sex and become a sex offender. You and your partner will face the same level of crimes. Only your partner can decide on wether not you’ll have sex but you can ask them if they want to in which they’ll have the final decision. Either your parents will find you and beat you up, ground you, or call the police. This will increase your happiness but it’s extremely risky like other crimes. It will even warm you before doing this that you are about to do an extremely risky thing.
Gamble More Than $10,000. With a 40% caught rate at first and the more you do it will become 70% as the bank you put your money in will smell at rat and one and you’ll be investigated and potentially arrested for doing this for 5 years for illegal gambling.
Open an Illegal Casino. With a 60% caught rate. You may or may not get caught but you will make a lot of money and you will have to buy a couple things like a radar distributor and a police scanner and an instant hider as well as a map wiper.
Deal drugs you can choose what drugs to sell and it will have the same caught rate as stealing a car. You can choose what drugs you wanna deal.
Join a Gang: If you join a gang, you’ll be at a huge risk of being hurt or dying form your wounds cause you’ll be held at gunpoint a lot and if you attack other gang members you’ll be killed. So it’s a high risk.
Ignore Traffic Laws. You will have a 50% caught rate. If you get caught you will be ticketed. Although if you continue to get caught over 3 times you’ll lose your license for a year. And if you continue to do this after that it will be revoked and you’ll have to hire a personal driver for $50 per hour or drive without a license. You can decrease your chances of getting caught the faster your car is and the more lights and license plate covers you put on your car.
Drive Without a License. If you loose your license for reckless driving you won’t have a license and if you wanna drive without a license there will be a 40% caught rate. In which you’ll got to jail for 1 year. And the more you continue to do it, the more your future jail sentences will be every time you get caught.
Get a Fake ID. You can buy on with bitcoin online and once you have it you can get into clubs but if you get into fights you’ll be arrested since the cops will eventually find out you’ve used a fake ID to get into the club. And you can attend events with your parents and older friends.
Drink Underage. You can also have a drink with stuff you bought at the liquor store with your Fake ID or just your parents’ Alchool. You can also ask your parents to buy you Alchool for you as well so you can have more drinks. You can also be caught for it if you do it at a party and the cops bust the party for noise complaints.
Do Drugs. Be careful as you’ll become addicted if you do it too much and your parents might find out potentially. If you do it at a party or a club you’ll have a 60% caught rate.
Fraud. There will be a 60% caught rate if you pretend to sell something online.
Click Fraud. If you install a bot on your YouTube channel you’ll be sued by google for click fraud and not only will you loose your channel and have to make another one and start your whole career all over again, you’ll also have will have to pay a humongous fine as well. There is a 80% caught rate.
Other Stuff:
The ability to take the license plate off the car. To decrease your chances of being caught for it. You’ll need to do this if you are becoming a street racer so the police don’t arrest you and so you don’t become wanted.
The ability to tint your windows or buy shades or disguises so you can get away form the police if you are street racing. You can also make a fake name as well so you’ll be known as that so you won’t have to reveal your identity to any of by our street racer friends but your chances of being caught are higher the more famous you are at like 40% percent the more famous you get the more likely you are to eventually get caught someday doing it.
Put a fake dealership on the car. Which will even further decrease your chances of getting caught.
Put a fake label on the car and pretend it’s another brand. Which would potentially get you sued for copyright infringement if you sell it.
The ability to buy non-street legal parts like spoilers and bodykits that aren’t street legal. Which would get your car impounded potentially the more upgrades you put on it. But if you attend and participate in street racing events you’ll get more reputation and if your car is faster you’ll win the races and get paid a lot of money. You can do this at 16 but your parents will become suspicious.
The ability to move to Mexico, and then another country after that to get away from the police and it will be another option to get away from being arrested.
Once you become a frequent street racer you’ll have a rep section on your “Street Rep” section int the, “Commit a Crime” section. You can check to see how much money you’ve made and how much you’re known in the street racing community. Then you can also be promoted or even kicked out for neglecting them if you cease doing it for a while.
If you sell a stolen car, and the person you sell it to gets caught after you sell it to them with it, your, “Guilt” level will rise which will compromise your happiness as you will have the feeling Iike you just, “Killed a Man” kind of thing.
Import a Car. It will cost a lot over $1,000,000 to do this. You can also illegally import it which will have a 80% caught rate and you will be put in prison for 3 years for smuggling and you obviously will lose the car and it will be crushed.
Non-criminal stuff: (NOT related to this topic and just my idea overflow so I don’t end up looking like I’m spamming the sub which I don’t mean to, just very excited about my ideas that’s all haha lol.)
The ability to admit your fetishes to people which may comprise your reputation and cause your parents or your friends to judge you. (With the ability of doing nothing about it or insulting or arguing with them back.)
The ability to do kinks with your partner. Whatever your fetish is. .........you get the point. But be careful cause If you do BDSM, you will get a lot of injuries and your health might potentially go down, and if you do it to your partner they could have the right to sue you for assault by 30%. Not a whole lot of a risk, but it can potentially be based on the person that you are with.
The ability to give your partner a lap dance. This is a way of getting your partner to like you by 10%.
Get naked in front of your partner. This will make your partner like you by 20%.
Tell you partner what they like. This will increase your partners’ appreciation for you by 15%.

6.1.1. The User is not a citizen or resident of a country, whose legislation is in conflict with the present Token Swap Allocation and/or the COSS.IO Project/Platform in general;
6.1.2. The User has a deep understanding of the functionality, usage, storage, transmission mechanisms and intricacies associated with cryptographic tokens, like bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), and blockchain-based software systems;
6.1.3. The User understands and accepts that the consensus mechanism securing the Ethereum Network may change in the future, and the stakeholders who are in control of the Network may also change as a result.
6.1.4. The User has carefully reviewed the code of the Smart Contract System located on the Ethereum blockchain at the addresses set forth at paragraph 1.6 and fully understands and accepts the functions implemented therein;
6.1.5. The User is legally permitted to participate in the Token Swap in the User’s jurisdiction;
6.1.6. The User will exchange COSS/LALA Tokens from a wallet respectively within a wallet service provider that technically supports the COS Tokens. The User understands and accepts, that failure to ensure this may result in the User not gaining access to his COS Tokens;
6.1.7. The User is legally permitted to receive software and participate in the Token Swap for the continued development of the COSS.IO Project/Platform;
6.1.8. The User is of a legal age to legally exchange COS Tokens;
6.1.9. The User will take sole responsibility for any restrictions and risks associated with the exchange of COS Tokens by the Smart Contract System as set forth below;
6.1.10. The User is not participating in the Token Swap for the purpose of speculative investment;
6.1.11. The User is not participating in the Token Swap for any illegal purposes;
6.1.12. The User is participating in the Token Swap primarily to support the continued development, testing, deployment and operation of the COSS.IO Project/Platform, being aware of the commercial risks associated with the COSS.IO Project/Platform;
6.1.13. The User waives the right to participate in a class action lawsuit and/or classwide arbitration against C.O.S.S. Pte. Ltd. and/or any individuals involved in the creation of COS Tokens;
6.1.14. The User understands the exchange of COS Tokens does not involve the purchase of securities as defined by relevant and applicable legislation and law or any equivalent in any existing or future public or private company, corporation or other entity in any jurisdiction;
6.1.15. The User understands that accepting the token swap of the User’s existing COSS/LALA Tokens in exchange for the COS Token, the creation of COS Tokens and the development of the COSS.IO Project/Platform carries significant financial, regulatory and reputational risks as further set forth in these Terms;
6.1.16. The User understands and expressly accepts that there is no warranty and/or representations whatsoever on COS Tokens, the Smart Contract System and/or the success of the COSS.IO Project/Platform, expressed or implied, to the extent permitted by law, and that the Smart Contract System is used and COS Tokens are exchanged at the sole risk of the User on an “as is” and “under development” basis and without, to the extent permitted by law, any warranties of any kind, including, but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose;
6.1.17. The User understands that the User has no right against any other party to request any refund of the COSS/LALA Tokens, which are exchanged for the COS Tokens under any circumstance;
6.1.18. The User understands that with regard to COS Tokens, no market liquidity can be guaranteed and the value of COS Tokens over time may experience extreme volatility or depreciate in full;
6.1.19. The User understands that the User bears the sole responsibility to determine if the User’s participation in the Token Swap may have tax implications for him. The User agrees not to hold any third party (including developers, auditors, contractors and/or founders) liable for any tax liability associated with or arising from the creation, ownership or use of COS Tokens and/or any other action or transaction related to the COSS.IO Project/Platform; and
6.1.20. As part of the Token Swap process the User will use his/her own account (address) on the Ethereum network, with a private key associated to this address and password. The password is used to encrypt the User’s private key. The User understands that the User must keep his password and private key safe and that the User may not share them with anybody. The User further understands that if his private key and/or password is lost or stolen, the User will not be able to generate a new password or recover his private key, and if the User also loses his private keys and password, the COS Tokens associated with the User's account (address) will be unrecoverable and will be permanently lost. Furthermore, the User understands that there is no recovery mechanism for lost keys and passwords, so no one will be able to help the User retrieve or reconstruct a lost password and private keys and provide the User with access to any lost COS Tokens.
7. COSS.IO Project/Platform Execution
7.1. The User understands and accepts that the User does not have any expectation of influence over governance and/or management of the COSS.IO Project/Platform.
7.2. The User understands and accepts that the COSS.IO Project/Platform may need to go through continued development works. The User understands and accepts that as part of the continued development, an upgrade of the COS Tokens may be required (hard-fork) and that, if the User decides not to participate in such upgrade, he may no longer use his COS Tokens and that non upgraded COS Tokens may lose their functionality in full.
8. Audit of the Smart Contract System
8.1. The Smart Contract System has been, on a reasonable effort basis, audited and approved by technical experts. Technical experts have confirmed that the Smart Contract System has, with regard to both accuracy and security, been programmed according to the current state of the art.
8.2. However, the User understands and accepts that smart contract technology is still in an early development stage and its application is of experimental nature, which carries significant operational, technological, financial, regulatory and reputational risks. Accordingly, while the audit conducted raises the level of security and accuracy, the User understands and accepts that the audit does not amount to any form of warranty, including direct or indirect warranties that the Smart Contract System and the COS Tokens are fit for a particular purpose and/or do not contain any weaknesses, vulnerabilities and/or bugs which could cause, inter alia, the complete loss of COS Tokens.
9. Risks
9.1. The User understands and accepts the risks in connection with accepting the token swap of the User’s existing COSS/LALA Tokens in exchange for the COS Token. The User shall not hold COSS.IO and any other third party liable in the event of any of the following risks occurring. In particular, the User understands the inherent risks listed hereinafter in addition to any other risks:
9.1.1. Risk of software weaknesses: The User understands and accepts that the Smart Contract System concept, the underlying software application and software platform (i.e. the Ethereum blockchain) is still in an early development stage and unproven. Accordingly, there is no warranty that the process for creating COS Tokens will be uninterrupted or error-free and that there is an inherent risk that the software could contain weaknesses, vulnerabilities and/or bugs causing, inter alia, the complete loss of COS Tokens.
9.1.2. Regulatory Risk: The User understands and accepts that the blockchain technology allows new forms of interaction and that it is possible that certain jurisdictions will apply existing regulations on, or introduce new regulations addressing, blockchain technology based applications, which may be contrary to the current setup of the Smart Contract System and which may, inter alia, result in substantial modifications of the Smart Contract System and/or the COSS.IO Project/Project, including its termination and the loss of COS Tokens for the User.
9.1.3. Risk of abandonment/lack of success: The User understands and accepts that the token swap of the User’s existing COSS/LALA Tokens in exchange for the COS Token and the continued development of the COSS.IO Project/Platform may be abandoned for a number of reasons, including lack of interest from the public, lack of funding, lack of commercial success or prospects (e.g. caused by competing projects). The User therefore understands that there is no assurance that, even if the COSS.IO Project/Platform is partially or fully developed and launched, the User will receive any benefits through the COS Tokens held by him.
9.1.4. Risk associated with other applications: The User understands and accepts that the COSS.IO Project/Platform may give rise to other alternative projects, promoted by unaffiliated third parties, under which COS Tokens will have no intrinsic value.
9.1.5. Risk of loss of private key: COS Tokens can only be accessed by using an Ethereum wallet with a combination of User’s account information (address), private key and password. The private key is encrypted with a password. The User understands and accepts that if his private key file or password respectively gets lost or stolen, the obtained COS Tokens associated with the User’s account (address) or password will be unrecoverable and will be permanently lost.
9.1.6. Risk of theft: The User understands and accepts that the Smart Contract System concept, the underlying software application and software platform (i.e. the Ethereum blockchain) may be exposed to attacks by hackers or other individuals that could result in theft or loss of COS Tokens.
9.1.7. Risk of Ethereum mining attacks: The User understands and accepts that, as with other cryptocurrencies, the blockchain used for the Smart Contract System is susceptible to mining attacks, including but not limited to double-spend attacks, majority mining power attacks, "selfish-mining" attacks, and race condition attacks. Any successful attack presents a risk to the Smart Contract System, expected proper execution and sequencing of COS Tokens transactions, and expected proper execution and sequencing of contract computations.
10. COSS.IO Project/Platform Execution
10.1. To the maximum extent permitted by all applicable laws, regulations and rules and except as otherwise provided in these Terms, COSS.IO hereby expressly disclaims its liability and shall in no case be liable to the User or any person for the following:
10.1.1. the COS Tokens being used for any purpose in connection with money laundering, terrorism financing or any other acts in breach or contravention of any applicable law, regulation or rule;
10.1.2. any cancellation or withdrawal from this Token Swap;
10.1.3. any failure or delay in the delivery and receipt of COS Tokens by the User
10.1.4. any failure, malfunction, breakdown of, or disruption to the operation of COSS.IO, COSS.IO Project/Platform, COSS website and COS Tokens, due to occurrences of virus, bug, hacks, cyber-attacks, distributed denials of service, errors, vulnerabilities, defects, flaws in programming or source code or otherwise, regardless of when such failure, malfunction, breakdown, or disruption occurs;
10.1.5. any failure or unfitness of COS Tokens for any specific purpose;
10.1.6. failure to disclose information relating to the progress of the Token Swap;
10.1.7. failure or delay in the availability of COS Tokens for trading;
10.1.8. any rejection of trading of COS Tokens;
10.1.9. any prohibition, restriction or regulation by any government or regulatory authority in any jurisdiction of the operation, functionality, usage, storage, transmission mechanisms, transferability or tradability or other material characteristics of COS Tokens;
10.1.10. occurrences of natural disasters, acts of God or other events beyond the control of COSS.IO that affect the businesses and/or operations of COSS.IO; and
10.1.11. any risks associated with COSS.IO, COSS.IO Project/Platform, COSS website and COS Tokens.
11. Limitation of Liability and Indemnification
11.1. To the maximum extent permitted by the applicable laws, regulations and rules:
11.1.1. COSS.IO shall not be liable for any loss arising out of or in connection with the purchase, use, receipt or holding of COS Tokens by the User;
11.1.2. In any case, the aggregate liability of COSS.IO, arising out of or in connection with the exchange, use, receipt or holding of COS Tokens by the User shall be limited to the amount exchanged by the User for his/her exchange hereunder; and
11.1.3. To the maximum extent permitted by the applicable laws, regulations and rules, the User shall indemnify, defend, and hold COSS.IO harmless from and against any and all claims, damages, losses, suits, actions, demands, proceedings, expenses, and/or liabilities filed/incurred by any third party against COSS.IO arising out of a breach of any of these Terms herein.
12. No Assignment
12.1. Subject to these Terms, only the User and no other person shall have the right to any claim against COSS.IO in connection with the User’s exchange hereunder. The User shall not assign, trade or transfer his/her right to any such claim. Any such assignment or transfer shall not impose any obligation or liability on COSS.IO to the assignee or transferee.
13. Right to Amend
13.1. COSS.IO may revise these Terms from time to time in any circumstances, including but not limited to:
13.1.1. changes in the type of cryptocurrency used for this Token Swap;
13.1.2. changes in the value of the COS Tokens;
13.1.3. changes in the Governing Law and Jurisdiction;
13.1.4. any other changes that may be required from time to time following changes to our business practices and further or required developments to the COSS.IO Project/Platform.
14. No Waiver
14.1. Any failure of COSS.IO to enforce or to assert these Terms shall not be construed as a waiver of the right of COSS.IO to enforce these Terms against the User.
15. Governing Law and Jurisdiction
15.1. These Terms shall be governed by the laws of the Republic of Singapore, and COSS.IO and the User agree to be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the Republic of Singapore in relation to any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms.
16. Third Party Websites or Platforms
16.1. COSS.IO may provide certain hyperlinks to third party websites, and the inclusion of any hyperlinks or any advertisement of any third party on the COSS website or other platforms does not imply endorsement by COSS.IO of their websites, products or business practices. If the User accesses and uses any third party websites, products, services, platforms and/or business, the User does that solely at his/her own risk for which COSS.IO will bear no liability.
17. Contracts (Right of Third Parties) Act
17.1. The Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act (Chapter 53B) of Republic of Singapore shall not under any circumstances apply to these Terms and any person who is not a party to this agreement shall not enforce these Terms.
18. Severance
18.1. If any of these Terms is rendered void, illegal or unenforceable by any legislation to which it is subject, it shall be rendered void, illegal or unenforceable to that extent and no further and, the rest of these Terms shall continue to be valid and in full force and effect.
18.2. The illegality, invalidity or unenforceability of any of these Terms under the law of any jurisdiction shall not affect its legality, validity or enforceability under the law of any other jurisdiction nor the legality, validity or enforceability of any other provision.
19. Intellectual Property Rights
19.1. These Terms shall not entitle the User to any intellectual property rights, including the rights in relation to the use, for any purpose, of any information, image, user interface, logos, trademarks, trade names, Internet domain names or copyright in connection with the COSS Website, the Token Swap and the COS Tokens.
20. Entire Agreement
20.1. These Terms contain the entire agreement between COSS.IO and the User and supersedes all prior agreements, understandings and/or arrangements in relation to the Token Swap.
21. REMEMBER
21.1. Your tokens, transactions, wallets and passwords are your responsibility. Protect your keys and passwords, they are unrecoverable. If you lose them someone else may get access to your tokens.

Help me earn $2K in Bitcoin Cash. Will design custom logos and simple websites until I reach that amount.

tl;dr
I will keep this as concise as possible. I need the money to pay a rather large RL bill. So I decided to turn to you guys again and offer my skills once more.

Goal:
Earn $2K to cover my expenses while helping a few of your projects get off the ground with a custom logo and/or website.

Projects & Payment:
I can work on both crypto and non-crypto projects and accept most top coins as payment.

Prices:
We can discuss prices for website privately, depending on your specific project needs. For logos prices are listed on the website.

Notes:
- You own copyright for the custom logos, I ship the source vector files (.AI/EPS) and any extra resolutions or file types you might need (including print-ready and b&w versions of your design).
- I can help with website deployment, SEO optimization and technical assistance as well.

Previous Work:
You can check my previous posts (https://www.reddit.com/btc/comments/7i6l5k/im_looking_to_start_a_bitcoin_cashdedicated/, https://imgur.com/a/mncFS) or the Norderly portfolio https://www.norderly.com/#portfolio (I've also designed the website layout).

To discuss a logo:
Preferably use the website contact form.

To discuss other graphics:
PM me here or use the form, either is fine.

Thanks for reading!

A Non-technical Bitcoin Primer (Part 2)

This is a continuation of Part 1.
PSEUDONYMITY Unlike credit card transactions, in which you give your name, Bitcoin transactions are pseudonymous (a pseudonym being an identifier other than your real name). Instead of having your name on your account, you have a public key, which is just a sequence of letters and numbers, like the one below.
3J98t1WpEZ73CNmQviecrnyiWrnqRhWNLy
That's your pseudonym.
People who are concerned with privacy view this as an advantage, since it enables you to make payments without revealing your identity.
Critics worry that this system facilitates crime, and proponents counter that cash is much better for criminals. Why?
Your account may be represented by some random sequence, instead of your name, but all Bitcoin transactions that have ever occurred are available for scrutiny on a public ledger called the blockchain. This data opens up the possibility of investigative methods to which cash is not susceptible.
Also, those who are concerned about criminals may be missing the point. It's sort of like censors in the mid-twentieth century who hadn't conceived of the World Wide Web (preventing kids from being exposed to profanity these days is a bit more difficult, to say the least).
The thing they're missing is that Bitcoin is only one of many cryptocurrencies, and others (such as zerocoin) are being developed that will provide much greater privacy.
File sharing on the internet is another example of how those seeking to overregulate Bitcoin might be missing the point. Early on, we had Napster, which was shut down due to concerns over copyright infringement. The effect of this shutdown appears to have been essentially the opposite of the intended effect. Instead of stopping illegal file sharing, it accelerated the development of file-sharing technologies that were even more difficult to stop. Since demand still existed, Kazaa came to the fore, and now we have BitTorrent.
It's "hard to put the genie back in the bottle," as Ben Lawsky, New York's Superintendent of Financial Services, has pointed out. When it comes to reducing crime, overregulation of Bitcoin could lead to an increased resistance to law-enforcement efforts, as we saw with file-sharing, while at the same time taking away from its many benefits.
THREATS TO BITCOIN'S SUCCESS When evaluating Bitcoin's chances for success or trying to understand price fluctuations, it's important to keep several key issues in mind.
ADOPTION Both merchant and consumer adoption are important, and both have been growing.
On the merchant side, we now have large reputable companies accepting Bitcoin, such as Overstock.com, Expedia, and Dish Network. See, for example, the list of companies working with Coinbase.
On the consumer side, one way to track growth is to look at the number of bitcoin wallets (wallets are to Bitcoin what accounts are to the traditional banking system). This number has also been growing steadily.
The website http://www.bitcoinpulse.com/ is one place to track such things.
Another interesting thing to watch will be the MIT Bitcoin Giveaway, in which $100 in bitcoins will be given to every MIT undergraduate in the fall 2014 semester.
ROBUSTNESS OF THE TECHNOLOGY One possible threat is that some kind of bug or design flaw will cause the system to crash. The technology has been around since 2009, and Bitcoin has been resilient so far. For example, it survived a distributed denial of service attack early this year.
There are a number of design issues to consider, such as scalability, mining centralization, and so forth, but there are a lot of people working on these issues. In fact, Bitcoin is considered by some to be supported by the largest research and development community in the world. Something like 10,000 of the smartest people in the world are working on issues such as scalability and user-friendliness.
COMPETING TECHNOLOGIES There is a chance that another technology that is superior to Bitcoin will emerge to kill it. At present, however, Bitcoin is the clear leader among cryptocurrencies, and it becomes more difficult to overtake as time passes, due to the network effect.
Already, Bitcoin is supported by a massive amount of infrastructure, in the form of mining equipment, exchanges, startup companies backed by venture capitalists like Andreessen Horowitz, software applications, and so forth.
REGULATION There is some chance that governments could slow the growth of the Bitcoin economy, for example by issuing regulations that make it difficult for exchanges to operate.
Regulations in China led to a sharp decrease in the price for a time. Many governments have reacted more favorably. In the U.S., the regulatory outlook has been improving. We've seen increased clarity from the IRS and are expecting favorable regulations to come out of New York sometime this month, which may make it easier for exchanges to get established in New York. This could lead to more liquidity and would reduce the risk of shock from one exchange going down.
Moreover, the U.S. just sold about 18 million dollars' worth of seized bitcoins in an auction, which provides additional legitimacy to the currency.
A FINAL NOTE: SOCIAL AND POLITICAL RAMIFICATIONS For better or worse, one thing large-scale technologies seem to have in common is their unpredictability. Who would have predicted that a social media platform called Twitter with a cute little bird logo would end up facilitating political revolutions throughout the Arab world?
FURTHER RESOURCES This article by Marc Andreessen gives a good overview.
A nice way to get started is also to just check out bitcoin regularly. The users here range from noobs to developers and Bitcoin entrepreneurs. So, you’ll see more technical talk and in depth discussion than you see in typical media stories, and you can ask if you don’t understand.
You can also try the Bitcoin 101 Blackboard Series, which I hear is quite good.
For a quick video on the technical aspects of Bitcoin, you can try the video Bitcoin Under the Hood or the shorter, less technical version of this video.
For another explanation of the technical underpinnings, you might try the Khan Academy videos.
If you're looking to purchase your first bitcoin, then depending on where in the world you live, you might consider getting started with Coinbase. It's reputable and very easy to use. Many people will advise you not to store your coins on a web wallet, but buying a few coins (or a fraction of a coin) on Coinbase is a good way to start as a beginner. Please be aware, though, that this is a new industry and purchasing Bitcoin in any form carries risk, so do your research. I wouldn't want to be the one recommending Coinbase just before someone manages to hack it!
I hope that helps!

Questions Answers
How did you manage to pick up Cryptex? Great question. This was the inception of Gravitas and tells a really great story of how close the bass music community is. I found Tyler Chase, Cryptex, on The Glitch Hop Forum which was started by Dewey DB and run by ill-esha and a few other glitch hop OGs. Cryptex had posted some of his first reglitches on the site and I ended up playing a few when I opened for Skrillex and PantyRaid at the Austin Music Hall. I posted that mix back to the forum and we ended up chatting over instant messenger about his music and our philosophy on music.
What's the philosophy behind your "free music" practice? The philosophy behind releasing almost all our music for free came from a conversation I had with edIT in 2010. Basically, he said, I know some people are going to download our music for free, some are going to buy it from iTunes and some are going to want to buy a shirt, record and CD of the album. It hit me that what all the artists and myself wanted was for as many people as possible to hear the music. Rather than asking people to buy the tunes and see if they liked it, why not give it to them for free and if they enjoy it, they'll likely donate on the next go around.
What goes into your decision to pick up an artist and/or release for Gravitas? Is it a sound, a type of artist? Something else? Also a great question.
The short answer, we know it when we hear it.
Long answer, it all happens very organically. The music scene and business is really just a bunch of personal connections and friendships. Having a crew of talented DJs and producers helps so much. We are always sharing music, checking out each others mixes, doing A+R, and looking for the next dope sound or producer. Myself, Psymbionic, ONE4ALL, Galvanix, Jason Torres, and The Digital Connection review demos.
In the end, I make the final decision because I personally invest money into each release that comes out.
Our goal is for the label to be something like a Ninja Tune or Warp Records. Less of a genre or sound and more of an esthetic.
Is the money for mastering and advertising? Artwork.
Mastering.
Promo Email to artists, blogs, and friends.
Email Marketing to fans.
Marketing / Promotions.
There's a lot of over-saturation in the industry, particularly among social media. How does this impact your social media presence and marketing campaigns, and which ways have you found most effective in reaching your fans and potential fans? Of course, we have a social media presence, but really, our focus is building our email list so that we can have a direct connection with the people that want our music. Email isn't going to go away and isn't a trend. It may change over time, but pretty much everyone I know checks their email at least once a day.
Facebook and twitter are more for a conversation. We don't want that to be our sole means of promotion. We want those channels to be funny, interesting and list, in a smart way, the most important events that we are involved in.
Can you tell us about how releasing most of your catalogue free is working out for you business-wise, and what went into making that decision? Thanks! Answered this question a bit already but I'll give you some more details. We're finding that the "Pay What You Want" model is absolutely brilliant. Of course, the music has to be good and it really helps if the artist has a solid fan base. Since it's "free", people don't feel bad about sharing the music and we don't have to spend a bunch of time, money and energy trying to lock it up. For anyone on our email list, which is something that we've worked really hard to grow, they will get pushed to our bandcamp and get the music for free.
We still send our tunes to iTunes, Beatport and all the rest of the digital retailers. We want the music to be ubiquitous. But with the retailers taking anywhere from 30-50%, it's just makes better sense to take donations from Bandcamp at 10-15%.
Overall, Gravitas is making money and most of the artists that have had releases with us have nothing but good things to say and have seen their bookings increase because of the exposure.
Do yall have some big studio where I could come hang and puff? Sure, let's puff tough at some point soon.
What happens at Flipside, stays at Flipside ;). Saw you bring the heat at Lava Lounge! Things got sufficiently weird! Lol. I've seen some truly bizarre things at Flipside. LOVE IT!
Really love what you guys have going down there. MAD respect on the home bass love and respect. 'Gravitas Fest' perhaps ;) ?? Im pretty sure pple would come!! :) I can say enough about The Do Lab and what they have created. They are one my big inspirations. The true spirit of events like Burning Man and Burning Flipside (Austin's regional burn) are really important. Participation vs. Spectator. Being a part of something is so much more fun and rewarding then paying $80 to walk up to stage and watch a real life movie.
If we were to do anything like that, it would be way more participation based then a typical festival.
You should do something like the Mad Decent block party. One day! We've still got a lot of work to do before we get there.
Maybe if I produce MIA's new album and have a worldwide hit, everyone follows my every move on twitter and I do a blackberry commercial, then we can do it.
Where do you think Glitch-Hop is headed in the future? It seems to have stayed underground for the most part with only a few artists getting major recognition. With the downslide of dubstep, do you think Glitch will be able to find a wider audience and compete with explosive movements like trap or do you think it will remain in it's niche? The lines are really blurring for me. We're definitely not 100% glitch hop label. A lot of us love that sound but there are parts of the crew that only play house or are all about future beat / drum and bass. We want to avoid getting labeled with any one genre.
To answer your question, I think Glitch Hop will continue to thrive and evolve. Acts like Tipper have cult like followings. I don't think it's going to blow up like trap but I do think it will have a healthy scene around it for a good long time.
Marvel Years! Love your sound man, just curious why you changed your name from Wonder Years...? He's getting online shortly. I can answer this. There was another band called "Wonder Years" and they had the copyright. It would have been a bad situation later down the road so he chose to make the switch before he took off which seems like is about to happen any day now.
Questions for any/all of you: When did you guys start/how long have you been producing? When did you start actually liking your art/getting exactly what you wanted? Advice for new producers? I'm 32, about to be 33, and I've been playing music and working in the industry since I was 15. Honestly, I'm still not happy with my production as I don't dedicate the time to it that I would like to. That said, I have a ton of fun doing all the other parts of the music industry. I think there is a lesson there. There are lots of roles to play if you want to be in the scene or business and maybe don't click as a producer. Also, life is long, you may be a producer or DJ in your twenties and then want to own a studio or do mastering in your 30s and run a label in your 40s.
Yeah man...more originals please! Always like what you put out...you know this. :) Thanks! I'll have a new one on Virtus in Sonus Vol. 2. Comes out on July 2nd.
For Jesse - As CEO at Gravitas, how do you view other crews/groups in the industry? Is your experience more of competition or is there an element of a "co-opetition" or collaboration? I don't think of them as competitors. There is loads of people, ears and music to go around. I think we've carved out a really cool niche for ourselves. I know the owners of labels like Muti, Simplify and Street Ritual. We share knowledge and a lot of artists work with us all. It's crazy what a small scene it really is. I can think of a couple situations where we chose not to do something because we didn't want to step on anyone's toes. We're the new kids on the block and know enough to respect those that came before and to try to set an example for those that come later.
We still going? Integrity Above All Else.
Question for Gravitas - Gravitas is one of the latin virtues. It literally means Importance, Weight and Meaning.
What values is the record label based around? Link to en.wikipedia.org
What's you guys relationship with the bloom series? it's amazing,, have you any plans to collaborate with the project in the future? The Digital Connection is up in Denver and will be playing Sonic Bloom. He's hooked into their scene. We know and respect them and I think you'll see more Gravitas artists there in the coming years. Somatoast would be my bet for the next artist to get their nod.
Jason, i haven't got to see any of your projection mapping stuff yet. Where can I view this? Jason is a BOSS with the visuals. The stuff he was doing during SXSW was truly unreal.
What's with the infatuation with bass these days? Music should not only be heard, but felt. Deep bass tones seem to literally put your mind and body into a specific state.
@Brede, who is the sexiest talent on the roster? Male or Female?
I'd have to say ill-esha is by far the sexiest. :) It's not even about looks either, confidence and talent are what make a person "sexy". Watch this and you will know exactly what I mean: Link to www.youtube.com
My cat is pretty damn sexy too.
On the off chance you return, i have a question. That is awesome that you say that. That is truly where our heads are at. I mentioned this in a few ways already but I want artists that can stand on their own two feet without a label. We come in and back them up with marketing. In return, they bring their fan base to us and the other artists benefit and earn new listeners. It's also, not a demand, but a gentle rule that you will support your fellow artists in their social media and real lives. In that sense, we are a creative collective and crew.
What does it mean for a label in this digital world of downloads and online distribution, when anyone can make their own bandcamp page and release music themselves? In regards to being a brand, yes, that is what Gravitas is. It should speak to you and in some way convey meaning, thought, depth, and integrity. Those are hard things to totally lock down in language but I believe you can hear that in our music. If people even get a whiff of that vibe from us then I'm a happy man.
Do you become more of a form of branding, unifying different artists under one sound? Or is it more like a way to get artists to collaborate and share ideas? In regards to free releases, I'm a student of the Internet. I have worked in tech jobs as an account manager, online and email marketing and webmaster. I love the Internet and there are new models of business that have never existed until the advent of digital media. Files can be shared and copied with a simple mouse click. We're not going to fight that, we're going to take advantage of it. We believe that the free sharing of the music is the first step of any relationship with a potential person / fan / customer. We want you to dig our stuff. We want you to share it. We want to play shows, collaborate, travel and see the world. And we ask that if you like our music, donate to help pay for costs and tell your friends about us.
I'm really curious - because you release so much for free, and it seems to defy the definition of what I thought of as a record label. Thanks for your question. I had a blast answering.
I feel like I'm on the Truman Show. Am I in control of my actions right now? Like I said, this scene is small. We are all connected via social networking and forums in some way. I probably share 2 or 3 friends with you on Facebook or something.
ARE YOU CONTROLLING THIS ENTIRE AMA. And yes, I'm controlling this entire AMA. :)
What festivals will you guys be hanging out at this summer, and will there be a gravitas tent/dome anywhere ever? I'll be at rootwire and gratifly, anyone gonna be there? There is talks of putting together an official artist management and booking agency. Both those ideas need to be separate from Gravitas though for legal reasons and to avoid conflict of interests. That said, the idea is to really back and artist from start to finish. 360 deal for independent artists.
You guys have a great label -- I love your music! I think ZEE's album is my favorite album of the year so far. Mr. Bill, when is the next Electrocado album coming out? (I know it isn't on the Gravitas label but shhh.) ZEE's album was crazy good. More people need to check it out. I'm pretty sure Zebbler is an alien and Encanti is the nicest, realest homie that knows so much about audio and sound design.
How is your management structure set up? i.e. CEO/President, director of A&R, etc... We're really just a group of people who love music. If we had to give titles, I'd be Owner / President, Psymbionic is VP and helps almost everyday with strategy and A+R. Jason Torres handles all things visual. ONE4ALL, Galvanix, Kendall Clark, The Digital Connection, Mike Abb and others help a ton with A+R and promotions. We're a big team and very "flat" as far as structure goes.
Thanks. Is it a full time operation for any of you guys? A few of us are doing music full time. I run Gravitas and another business full time from my house. Others are working day jobs and putting as much time into music as possible. ill-esha gave me some great advice recently about this, you'll know when the time to jump full time into music is. It's scary for sure, but there is nothing else like pursuing your dreams full on.
Agreed. I've just started up a label and have some uneasiness about some future situations, particularly generating revenue for the label to be self sustaining. Definitely hoping to be in a similar position in the future. For sure. When I started Gravitas, I was working full time for a technology company and making a healthy salary. I put a lot of money into each release. I was laid off from my job and we were forced to take a look at the costs and cut back. Honestly, that was the best thing that could have happened.
I'd say this, there is definitely an initial investment needed to get the brand of your label out there. You need to be consistent with quality, especially right at first. Paying an established producer an upfront fee, can help to get the label's name out there more and earn some credibility.
Haha, I'm actually in a eerily similar situation. Glad to hear things are working well for you! I really appreciate the feedback; I've looked to Gravitas multiple times as an example to follow, and I really appreciate you taking the time to do this! For sure, feel free to hit me on twitter or here if you have questions. @jessebrede.
What are your thoughts on G Jones? He's a G.
Why do you insist on making music that everyone wants to practice making babies to? The world needs more smart, talented people. Get busy.
Can I get a free Gravitas t-shirt? We're working on a system to grow money on trees. Until then, shirts cost money to make so, sadly, no.
We will send you some stickers though. Link to gravitasrecordings.com
You guys are in Austin as well, eh? Where are all the glitch hop shows here? That's my question. I see ill-esha/psymbionic comin through on sxsw but that's about the extent of it. We've put on a fair amount of shows. ChrisB, ill-esha, Russ Liquid, Nicoluminous.
We do a monthly every 2nd Wednesday (tonight) at Barcelona. Like our facebook page and get on our newsletter and you should know what the happs is.
What are your main sources of revenue? Giving away music for free doesn't generate much. We all play locally or tour nationally. We've done some paid projection mapping gigs for brands as well. Also,you would be surprised at how much people will donate when given the chance. Rough stats, 1 in 10 people usually donate and when they do it's at least a few bucks and sometimes $20. It's a really interesting psychological experiment.
Anyone catch the Opiuo show in Hollywood? Soulular maybe, he's out in LA. Psymbionic is playing with him this Thursday in Chicago.
When will you start accepting bitcoin? I'm a bitcoin noob. Is this a serious question? I'm down with the idea.
Cryptex is siiick! How long have you been involved with this genre of music? Username fail.
Just wanted to say you guys are my favorite label, not only is the music kickass but the price structure and quality is also top notch; keep doing what you guys do! Thank you, that means a lot to us. All the artists work so hard on their music and truly just want to share it. We love to hear that you are into what we are doing.
The scene in Austin is probably pretty similar to most fairly large cities in the US. Proggy/electro house is the norm for most clubs. I feel like we have a larger than usual bass music collective, most likely due to the college students and burners that reside here. Ill-esha is AMAzing. :) Austin is great. It's a true scene at this point. The city is maturing and so is the scene. Loads of great things happening at this point. Disco Donnie Presents had the scene hostage for a number of years, they kept a lot of smaller promoters out and down while losing tons of money and booking the same 30 djs. Those days are over in Austin. We have several independent promoters that are doing solid shows on the regular. The most unexpected thing to happen was having people respond so positively and for projects to take off. We're in our little bubble so seeing people truly get excited about a Mr. Bill remix contest or ill-esha album puts the biggest fucking smile on my face.
We also have our pockets of drum and bass enthusiasts, dungeon style dubstep, and my personal favorite, UK garage.
I always thought it was to distinguish yourself because whenever I googled wonder years, your music is obviously not the first thing that came up haha. Anyway, thanks for doing this AMA! I am always posting your music in /electrohiphop, /under10k, and /listentothis. I can confirm this. Starkey has mad love for ya.
This dude is absolutely killin' it in the weird GlitchJuke Purp-Fusion realm. Hope he continues to push the boundaries. Thriftworks is on a whole 'nother plane, though. We need more of this sound in Tennessee :[ Thrifworks is on another level. His field recordings and "found sounds" are probably my favorite of anything in that style. Absolute boss status.
Hell yeah. I was so stoked/surprised to hear he was touring with Lorin. But goddamn, there's nothing else like his stuff that I'm aware of. Hyper-dimensional uncertain shroom-hop. The way he processes vocals is untouchable. I believe he studies at Berkely. He's posted some pictures of places where he's working. His process looks so cool.
Psymbionic handles the majority of the mastering for the label and every once and a while I will master something for us. Sugarpill has done a good bit as well.
Lidsky is a friend of mine, and I absolutely love his music. He's pretty new to the label but he is the shit. Yup Yup!
Spoiler alert bro. Whoops.
Dinostep was a project 50 million years in the making, I did not expect to hear any mentions of it in the AMA. I sampled all of the audio from Jurassic Park and chopped up my favorites bits creating a dark journey through the aural landscape of Jurassic Park. Life...finds a way. Link or it didn't happen.
Started in Garage band in 05. Switched to Ableton in 07. Made a lot of terrible terrible music. But I was having fun and that helped me keep at it. Just remember what Ira Glass said: Link to behance.vo.llnwd.net. Absolutely bizarre that you posted this. Our very own, Nikki Hampson, designer of the Gravitas logo and Virtus In Sonus artwork, made that poster. It's for sale in our merch shop. Maybe that's where you got it but doesn't look like it.
Link to music.gravitasrecordings.com
Yeess. I keep forgetting that quote. I need to frame it in... everywhere I go. Get it here: Link to music.gravitasrecordings.com :)
Hit up [email protected] to book him ;) [email protected] please.
Just in case one rips, that is a great idea. I keep a spare in my car as well.
We'll see. That remix really surprised me with how much it took off!! Link to soundcloud.com
